is an African American holiday which celebrates family, community and culture created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1965. Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 thru January 1. Kwanzaa represents the first fruits of the harvest celebrated in Africa. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.
